Did you know that white wedding gowns are a relatively new thing? It wasn't until the wedding of Queen Victoria in 1840 to her cousin, Albert of Saxe that white became the chosen color of gowns. Before that, brides wore gowns in vibrant colors to show off their position in society. Once Queen Victoria broke tradition and wore white that became the new symbol of purity and wealth and women of all social classes followed suit. In earlier times, blue was the chosen color to symbolize purity.
This old poem sums up what people now thought about getting married in colors other then white:
"Married in white, you will have chosen all right.
Married in grey , you will go far away.
Married in black, you will wish yourself back.
Married in red, you'll wish yourself dead.
Married in blue, you will always be true.
Married in pearl, you'll live in a whirl.
Married in green, ashamed to be seen,
Married in yellow, ashamed of the fellow.
Married in brown, you'll live out of town.
Married in pink, your spirits will sink."
Recently, there has been a trend to add color back into the wedding gown industry. While the popular color
is still white we have seen a rise in ivory gowns and even ones of light pink, taupe or champagne. Adding a colored sash often in dark or bright colors is another trend seen to break tradition.
